Why clients will pay for it
More and more customers ask AI where to go: “the best dentist in Leeds”, “a garage open on Saturdays”. The answer isn't a list of ten links. It's two or three names. A business that isn't one of them doesn't get considered.
Your client can't see this on their own. There is no Search Console for ChatGPT, and asking it once by hand says very little, because the answer changes from one ask to the next. That gap is the service: you measure it, you fix it, and you show whether it worked. It's the SEO question of the AI era, and it goes by several names: AEO, GEO or “AI SEO”.
Start with a measurement, not a pitch
The strongest argument isn't a slide about AI. It's the client's own result: a score, the competitors AI recommends instead, and the reasons it gives for picking them. A business owner who sees a competitor named in ChatGPT's answer doesn't need convincing that the problem exists.
- Run a check on the prospect before the meeting, with the questions their customers would ask in their city.
- Show who gets recommended and why: “open on Sundays”, “4.8 from 300 reviews”, “prices on the website”. Those reasons are the to-do list.
- Show what AI knows about the business itself, and anything it gets wrong: an old phone number or the wrong opening hours is an easy first win.
What the monthly service includes
- Measure. The same questions, on the same assistants, every two to four weeks, so the months can be compared.
- Fix. Facts as text on the website, business markup (schema.org) and an llms.txt file, a complete Google Business Profile, listings in the directories AI cites for that type of business, and steady reviews.
- Report. What changed, what was done, and what comes next, with the margin of error so a normal swing isn't sold as progress or blamed as a drop.
Most of the fixes are work your agency already does for SEO and local SEO. What's new is measuring it in AI answers and choosing the fixes by what AI says about the competitors.
How to package it
- As an add-on to an SEO or local SEO retainer: the easiest sale, because the client already trusts you with search.
- As an entry service for new clients: a one-off audit with the first fixes, then a monthly follow-up.
- In your reports: one page on AI visibility next to the usual SEO numbers. Clients notice when their agency talks about AI before they ask.
What to promise, and what not to
- Don't promise first place in ChatGPT. Nobody controls what AI answers, and the assistants change models and sources often.
- Promise measurement and work: the same questions every month, the fixes done, and an honest report of what moved.
- Set the timing. Changes to the website and the Google profile start showing in answers after two to six weeks; reviews and listings on other sites take longer. It's a service of months.
Three mistakes to avoid
- Measuring with one question, by hand. One answer is luck. Use several questions, asked more than once, on more than one assistant.
- Reporting every change as a result. A score that goes from 29 to 22 with a margin of ±12 hasn't really moved. Say so, and your reports keep their credibility.
- Working only on the website. AI reads reviews, directories and forums as much as the site. The sources it cites for the competitors show where to act.
Where Chatlisted fits
The Agency plan gives you 5 businesses measured every 15 days on four assistants, reports with your agency's brand (also as PDF), a dashboard with every client and 20 prospecting scans a month for the first meeting. To see what a client would get, run the free check on one of them.
